Breed Specific Training for Judges (Show)

Individual ESS Breed Clubs will from time to time organise specific Breed Seminars in their particular region.  They will likely be advertised on their own website or in the dog press. Breed Club Secretaries can be contacted to obtain details of any up and coming events that they may be organising . 

The Joint ESS Judging Consortium (JESSJC) usually holds a Breed Seminar plus A3 Assessment process each year (known as the 'Competence Day') .  Attendance at the A3 Assessment is usually by invitation and is subject to an up to date Judging Questionnaire which fulfills the A3 Criteria. being submitted to the ESS Breed Clubs.

The JESS JC Breed Seminar and A3 Assessment will be advertised in the Dog Press in the ESS Breed Notes. If you require further information about this please contact the JESS JC Administrator or any Breed Club Secretary.

NEW from 1st January 2011

As part of its ongoing commitment to the Fit For Function: Fit For Life campaign, the Kennel Club has announced a new requirement for Gundog judges prior to their approval to award KC Challenge Certificates (CCs) for the first time.

KC Prospectus    

The KC Canine Activities, Education and Training department  has introduced a Prospectus for
training seminars across all disciplines.

  • Conformation and Movement - Hands On Assessment (Points of the Dog)
  • Conformation and Movement Seminar
  • Requirements of a Dog Show Judge (KC Rules & Regulations)

NB: additionally there is a 'Requirements of a Dog Show Judge (KC Rules & Regulations) REFRESHER' seminar which is available for existing CC judges should they wish to attend.   

Included in the ‘general' category of seminars for all those interested in developing skills and knowledge in the effective running of Clubs and Societies and Shows is:

  • Ring Stewarding Seminar
  • Show Management Seminar

New for 2009/2010, the KC is adding two seminars in this category which will be:

  • Managing a Dog Society
  • Effective Meeting Skills for Chairmen and Secretaries

An up to date list of these and other Kennel Club Seminars can be found in the Kennel Gazette and on the Kennel Club website  in the training events section 

The Kennel Club's required training programme for new show judges consists of a number of compulsory seminars. The content of all of these contains material relating to Fit for Function: Fit for Life

Judges should as part of their ongoing development keep themselves up to date on breed standards and any changes to Rules and Regulations that have an impact on Canine Health and Welfare.
